HIV infection is increasing. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of Americans over 50 with HIV has increased fivefold (16,300 in 1995, 90,600 in 2003). The elderly represent about 14% of those living with HIV, with senior women representing 18%. The number of infected women is even higher for American women of color, and when looking at global HIV infection rates comes in at a staggering 47%. This means that less than half of all HIV infections worldwide are found in women.

A recent study published by Emory University found one reason for the high number of older women with HIV. They surveyed 514 women over the age of 50 and found that their knowledge about the infection was low. For example, about 50% of women believed that vasectomy and diaphragms prevent the spread of HIV.

Other reasons include that many older women, who have sex with men, also do not use condoms, knowing that they are past the point of worrying about pregnancy. Women also mistakenly think that they cannot get HIV if they do not engage in behaviors they perceive as risky. This is the truth of the matter. HIV is a virus. It is an opportunist. It doesn't matter whether you are male or female. It doesn't matter who you've had sex with or how many people you've had sex with. It certainly doesn't care about the color of your skin, your bank balance or your age.

HIV is primarily spread in two ways. The first is the sharing of contaminated intravenous drug equipment. Second, and more commonly, HIV is spread through unprotected sex. Women are more often receptive partners and receptive partners are more likely to be infected. Post-menopausal women are at greater risk due to changes in vaginal tissue. With less estrogen to nourish the vagina, tissue atrophies (thins) and less oiliness occurs. Breastfeeding mothers are advised to wait 30-60 minutes before exercising before breastfeeding. However, if this is not possible, you still have options.

Use RPE to ensure quality breast milk.

The key to insuring your breast milk isn't affected by exercise is to workout at a moderate intensity level. A simple way to measure this is to use the Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale.

Here's how it works. The difficulty level of the exercise can be given a number between 1 and 10. 10 is exhaustion or maximum intensity (you can barely breathe and are close to stopping exercise). As you lower the intensity, the scale goes down. It eventually ends at 1 or an exercise effort that you can barely feel.

How many times in your life have you heard the saying, "Your body is your temple?" It's one of those ideas that sneaks into your consciousness and you don't know where you actually heard it.

Think about it for a moment. Do you believe that your body is your temple? Maybe it doesn't make sense to you at first. Let's see what the dictionary says about a "temple" and then you tell me.

Your body is a place that needs to be devoted to worship.

If you do not worship your body, who will? And what exactly does worshiping your body mean? Worshiping your body means taking care of it. Worshiping your body means doing what's best for it, not just on the outside, but on the inside as well. Worshiping your body means nurturing it with proper nutrition, regular exercise and adequate sleep. Worshiping your body means learning about it and listening to it. When your body is sick, it tells you that something is missing. It needs something you're not giving it. I am not talking about pooja obsessing over how you look. I'm talking about treating your body with respect, compassion and care.

There is a divine presence within your body.

Is it not understood that a divine presence resides within your body? You don't need to be religious to believe that we are all one with the universe. How else can we explain the miracles of our bodies. Think for a moment about all the functions it performs without us even thinking about it. Our heart beats, our eyes blink, we breathe, we swallow, we digest--all without conscious thought. Our countless hormones, enzymes, muscles, bones, organs, all work in perfect harmony. It's amazing how many of us treat our bodies the way they do. Who can explain such a wondrous device that a force greater than ourselves resides within us?

Wouldn't you agree that your body is reserved for a very valuable function? Without your body, you would have no vehicle to carry you through this life, no way to fulfill what you see as your life's purpose, no way to do the things that are important to you. I suspect you can see that this is a very valuable function. After all, what could be more important? Using your body to do all the things you need to do every day. And, beyond that, being able to use your body to do what you want to do. I'm going to get a little personal here. I was in a position where my body was "sick" and I couldn't do many of the things I needed and wanted to do. It's no fun. Many of us take our bodies for granted. Unfortunately, it took a crisis for me to learn that lesson. Don't wait until you have a crisis in your life to start appreciating your body.

So, can we agree that your body is really your temple?

Many of us tend to focus more on getting our hair cut, colored and styled, our nails polished impeccably and our makeup perfect. But what do we do with everything below our neck? How much time do we spend caring for those parts of us?

How many of us pay careful attention to our body's nutrition? If you don't put the right kind of fuel in a car, it simply won't run. How many of us make sure we are getting enough exercise to keep our bodies in good working order? Here comes the car again! As you probably know, if you don't drive a car but leave it parked in the garage, it won't run very well. You can't count on it when you need it. Well, our bodies are no different. We must use it. The more we use it, the better it goes.

As you are reading this, I bet you already realize what you are doing to destroy your "temple". Inadequate exercise, poor nutrition, inadequate rest, stress.
